BBC and IPTV

The BBC Trust invited the chairman of the Open Source Consortium to its event on 26 February, launching a public consultation on the BBC's proposal to develop a joint venture partnership (project "Canvas") to help enable the delivery of internet protocol television (IPTV).

BETT 2009 & BBC article

The OSC attended BETT 2009 (kindly invited to Open Forum Europe's "Open Source Precinct" stand) to speak to potential customers for OSC's members and to potential members of the OSC. BETT is a leading show for the use of technology in education.

Subsequently, the BBC published a long article (new page) by Andrew Miller asking several questions about Open Source in schools, and quoting Gerry Gavigan, the OSC's chairman.

UK COI update

The UK's COI (Central Office of Information) has issued Browser testing guideline TG117 [link (new page)] this January. It has been updated to substantially address the OSC's issues with their previous direction during public consultation.

Their guideline is "for all website managers, web developers and web testers delivering public sector websites..." and includes the following statement: "The guidance on minimum technical standards highlights the importance of developing websites to standards to ensure browser accessibility." The OSC welcomes this.

The OSC is specifically acknowledged in the new guidance.

Coverage for OSC

There has also been a general widening of the potential audience for DRM-free BBC material as reported by IT Pro Portal.

BBC and Windows 7 (continues)

The BBC Fair Trading Unit passed the OSC's complaint to the BBC News website, so the OSC has pointed out that the issue of governance is the responsibility of the Unit or, if it remains unwilling to handle the complaint, the BBC Trust itself.

The OSC has started a complaint with the BBC's Fair Trading Unit that the BBC are yet again giving the appearance of advertising a Microsoft product (that, in this case, does not even yet exist).
