BETT 2009 & BBC article
The OSC attended BETT 2009 (kindly invited to Open Forum Europe's "Open Source Precinct" stand) to speak to potential customers for OSC's members and to potential members of the OSC. BETT is a leading show for the use of technology in education.
Subsequently, the BBC published a long article (new page) by Andrew Miller asking several questions about Open Source in schools, and quoting Gerry Gavigan, the OSC's chairman.
BETT 2009
The OSC was invited by Open Forum Europe to share their "Open Source Precinct" stand at the BETT Show 2009 at Olympia. Some of the OSC Council and Members were able to speak to potential customers for the OSC's members, to potential members of the OSC, and to press representatives. BETT is well attended, and many people stopped by the stand, even though it was not on the main floor.
BBC article on Open Source in schools
Andrew Miller contacted the OSC to request an interview for an article he was writing for the BBC news website. We were able to link him to Gerry Gavigan, our chairman, in time for the deadline for the article.
The resulting article (new page) asks whether open source software can help schools use their budgets more efficiently.
The article concludes by taking up Gerry's message. "Schools could make significant savings by using open source, but this also requires a significant investment of time, research and training. [U]sing a combination of both commercial and open source [...] can help to reduce costs while still giving students a choice."
