The BBC Trust invited the chairman of the Open Source Consortium to its event on 26 February, launching a public consultation on the BBC's proposal to develop a joint venture partnership (project "Canvas") to help enable the delivery of internet protocol television (IPTV).

The Open Source Consortium welcomes the decision by the BBC Trust to seek its views on this issue. As with BBC iPlayer, we want to ensure that the proposal does not adversely affect the ordinary consumer to use any suitable software enabled device, without requiring special skills to operate it.

This will be achieved by ensuring genuine interoperability using unencumbered open standards, rather than de facto industry standards imposed by dominant players in the software industry seeking market advantage.
